Strength training means using resistance to make muscles produce force against an external load or bodyweight. Barbells, machines, dumbbells, cables, bands, kettlebells, weighted carries, and bodyweight progressions can all count when the exercise is challenging enough and can be progressed over time.
The useful definition is not "lifting heavy things randomly." A strength-training plan usually controls exercise selection, sets, reps, load, effort, rest, range of motion, frequency, and progression so the body has a clear reason to adapt.
For health, public guidelines treat muscle-strengthening work as a companion to aerobic activity: adults are generally encouraged to train major muscle groups on at least two days per week. That does not mean every person needs a bodybuilding split or a barbell program.
For getting stronger, heavier loads and skill practice usually matter more because strength is specific to the movement, load, and technique being trained. For hypertrophy, a wider range of reps and loads can work when sets are hard enough, volume is recoverable, and progression is honest.
Strength training is not automatically fat loss, "toning," rehab, posture correction, hormone optimization, or injury proofing. It can support body composition, function, bone and muscle health, and confidence, but those outcomes still depend on food intake, exercise choice, effort, progression, sleep, symptoms, medical context, and consistency.
A practical starting question is: can you repeat the exercise with the intended technique, add reps or load over time, and recover well enough to train again? If pain, dizziness, numbness, collapsing form, unusual symptoms, pregnancy/postpartum concerns, osteoporosis, surgery, or medical limits are in the picture, the plan needs more individual guidance than a glossary can provide.
The evidence supports progressive resistance training as a useful training category, not one magic method. Machines are not fake, bodyweight is not automatically easy, free weights are not mandatory, and soreness is not proof that the program is working.
