RPE stands for rating of perceived exertion. In lifting, it is usually a 1-10 effort rating tied to reps in reserve: RPE 10 means no clean reps left, RPE 9 means about one rep left, and RPE 8 means about two reps left.
Use RPE to describe the set you actually did, not the set the spreadsheet hoped you would do. If the planned weight feels like RPE 9 during warm-ups, lowering the load can keep the session inside the intended training effect.
RPE is feedback with error bars. It gets more useful when the lift, technique standard, range of motion, rest time, and rep target stay consistent long enough for the rating to mean something.
For strength work, RPE can help choose top-set loads, keep backoff sets from turning into accidental max tests, and compare good days with tired days. For hypertrophy work, it helps keep hard sets hard without pretending every set must reach failure.
RPE should not override pain, sharp technique breakdown, dizziness, or an obvious recovery problem. A painful RPE 8 set is not the same training data as a normal RPE 8 set.
Beginners, new exercises, unstable lifts, and very easy sets are harder to rate accurately. In those cases, pair RPE with simple notes about bar speed, technique, pain, sleep, and whether the next set would still be productive.
The evidence supports RPE and RIR as useful autoregulation tools, not as perfect sensors. They help you make better training decisions; they do not prove one exact load, failure distance, or set-stop rule for every lifter.
