RIR means reps in reserve: how many clean reps you think you had left before the set would have reached failure with the target technique. If a set ends with two good reps left, that is roughly 2 RIR and often maps to about RPE 8.
Use RIR to decide whether a set matched the plan. A planned 2 RIR squat that turns into a grinder probably needs less load, more rest, fewer backoff sets, or a simpler day.
RIR is most useful when the exercise, range of motion, rest time, rep target, and technique standard stay consistent. Otherwise you may be comparing a clean set with a shortened, rushed, or pain-limited set and pretending the number means the same thing.
For hypertrophy, RIR helps keep sets hard enough without making every set a max-effort failure test. For strength practice, leaving more reps in reserve can keep speed, setup, and repeatability cleaner on heavy work.
The common 0-3 RIR language is a practical effort zone, not a universal command. Isolation lifts, machine work, heavy compounds, peaking phases, beginner practice, dieting, and high-fatigue weeks can all justify different distances from failure.
Do not use RIR to excuse pain, collapsing technique, dizziness, or recovery problems. A painful 2 RIR set is not the same training signal as a normal 2 RIR set.
The evidence supports RIR as useful feedback and proximity-to-failure language, but estimates are still subjective. Beginners, unfamiliar movements, very easy sets, and high-fatigue sessions can make the estimate especially noisy.
