Plain-English Explanation

VO2max is a useful marker of aerobic power: how much oxygen your body can use when exercise gets hard enough that oxygen delivery and use become limiting. A higher number usually helps endurance performance, but it is not the whole endurance story.

A lab test with gas analysis is the cleaner way to measure it. A watch estimate is a model built from heart rate, pace, power, age, weight, and past sessions, so it can move for reasons that are not true fitness changes: heat, hills, fatigue, sensor fit, caffeine, sleep, illness, or a new running route.

Training can improve VO2max, especially when a plan includes enough easy aerobic work plus carefully dosed harder sessions such as intervals. But a bigger VO2max does not automatically mean faster race times, better fat loss, or better health in every person. Threshold, running economy, pacing, durability, strength, recovery, and consistency still matter.

Use VO2max as one clue, not a command. If the number drops after a hot week or a rough night of sleep but normal paces, breathing, and recovery are fine, do not rewrite the whole plan. If performance, recovery, and symptoms are all sliding, treat that as a broader training or health signal rather than a VO2max problem alone.

Claims that one workout, supplement, breathing drill, or wearable hack will "skyrocket VO2max" need direct evidence in humans, with the same method, population, time frame, and meaningful outcomes. Mechanism talk and screenshots are not enough.
